Biology of Wookiees
Wookiees are a sentient mammalian species native to the planet Kashyyyk. They are, by nature, aboreal primates. Wookiee scientists believe that Wookiees were originally carnivores, but over the centuries they developed an omnivorous diet.
Modern Wookiees have retained a number of traits of the tree-dwelling species from which they evolved. They are covered in a thick fur which protects them from the elements. Wookiees also have sharp teeth, as well as retractable climbing claws on their hands and feet. Wookiee culture strictly forbids the use of the claws in combat. While an unarmed Wookiee might use their teeth for defense, they are more commonly used for "love bites" during courtship and mating.
Adult Wookiees are quite tall compared to other sentient species, and can grow to just over 2 meters in height. They are a monogamous species and typically mate for life. While female Wookiees have six nipples, mutiple births of more than two children are quite rare. The gestation period for Wookiees is just over a standard year in length.
Wookiees can live for centuries and a life span of about 200 years is quite common. There are reports of some Wookiees living up to three times that long, but they have not been scientifically verified in modern times.
